They got MaD and Dashed in the Dark…

P1060505

Despite only a couple of weeks notice and the threat of heavy rain and wind, the inaugural MaD Dash in the Dark went off perfectly yesterday; 30th October.

Entries were always going to be low, with it being the first event plus on a weekday evening and in the dark but all who did line up had a thoroughly good “Dash”, despite a couple of tumbles.

The venue, despite being on relatively flat ground, in fact hardly has any dead-flat areas at all; having been a pitch and putt golf course in a former life, so there are a never-ending choice of features to incorporate into the course layouts, which means a new course for every race.

Being a night race we made sure we tapped it from end to end, although the high wind did mean constant tape repairs were needed.

So 7.30 arrived and the race kicked off at the back of the field in complete darkness, this made for a great visual experience to the spectators as the lights shot-off from the start line like demented aliens.

The event was to be 1 hour in duration with the aim to get as many laps in as possible, whilst avoiding slower riders and the tech features the course designer had put in.

It soon became apparent some quick boys had showed up including local quick boy Nic Burridge, also Alex Thomsett, who had made the trip from Weston Super-mare.

As the laps went by Nic Burridge established a lead of around 10 minutes, which was the fluctuate until lap 9, where Alex took over the lead. Further down the field Sky Scott had an altercation and crashed out on lap 6, which was shame as he’d been running around 4th, young local rider Charlie Millman, taking part in his 3rd ever race, rode his 2002 Cannondale Gemini to a respectable 6th place. The Hard brothers looked well fast on the start and proved to live up to it taking 3rd and 4th.

The race also attracted many who would normally not enter this sort of event, which is one of the main reasons for us running these races, we also want to give the local people of Gloucestershire a chance to race cross-country mountain biking without having to travel miles.

All in all everyone seemed to enjoy the event and several mentioned it was great to have winter races for mountain bikes, as they normally had to resort to riding cross in the winter.

Must say a big thanks to all the crew who helped on the night, Emma and Pete Millman, Lewis Richards, Michelle and Pete Bonner, Beth Thick, Steve Cooke, James Allen, (for being James), plus a special mention to Millie Millman, Sheila Foot and my side-kick, one Andy Gardner.

This is just the first of many so please keep an eye on this website and our facebook page for new.
The next event, “The MaD Sunday Roast” is on Sunday 10th November, yes its a daylight event and will follow the normal British Cycling Categories. Full details, coming but put it in your diary now.
